Things I Actually Needed in My First Year of Occupational Therapy School

Having just wrapped up my first year of OT school, I’ve been reflecting on that pre-semester excitement—specifically, my urge to buy every single supply in sight just to feel prepared. While some of those purchases were lifesavers, others definitely could have waited. To save you some coin and closet space, here are the 5 essential items I actually used every single day during my first year.

Long hours on campus mean you need a lot of fuel. This lunch box became my daily ride-or-die because it easily fits breakfast, lunch, and all my snacks without being overly bulky. Plus, it has a long shoulder strap, which is a lifesaver when you're walking across campus with full hands.

I love a good bundle, and this one was a major win. It includes a badge reel (an absolute must-have for your campus ID) and a pouch. Instead of using it for pens, I used the pouch as a backup makeup bag for those long, exhausting days.

Fun fact: grad school is what finally made me a coffee drinker, and this cup has been by my side through it all. It’s perfect for both hot and iced drinks because it includes interchangeable hot and cold lids (plus straws!). I actually own two different colors because I use it every single day without fail.

I am not joking when I say almost every single person in my cohort has an iPad for note-taking. While it is a big investment, it has seriously transformed how I study. I have had mine since undergrad and it makes carrying around all your lectures, readings, and notebooks at the same time so effortless. A lot of course materials are accessed online, so being able to pull it up on your iPad and take your notes directly on it is a lifesaver!

If you decide to invest in an iPad, grab a paper-feel screen protector to go with it. It completely eliminates that slippery "writing on glass" feeling and feels exactly like a real pen on a piece of paper. Plus, it pulls double duty by protecting your screen from scratches.
All of these items truly helped me survive my first year of OT school, and they also make incredible, practical gifts for any incoming OT or grad student in your life. Happy studying and happy shopping!
Sincerely,
Sara
